Working with instincts Martins handed her an handkerchief. if she was not so emotional she would have seen it in his face. He was disgusted at what a father could do to his only child.
How did you get to this point Natasha, how did you break free from your father?
“My mum had a cousin in Abuja that she was so fond of and we had visited her repeatedly. During my mum’s burial, this cousin Miss Williams gave me her number. So when I was planning my escape, no where appeared safer than Miss Williams home. On the day that I was set to run, I slipped in some sleeping pills that I had gotten from the local pharmacy into my fathers drink. I then raided his room and took the money that I found in his drawer. After that, I headed straight to the bus park without looking back.
Miss Williams let me in wholeheartedly when I explained how I was defiled, how I was a punching bag to my father and how my educational aspirations had suffered a set back. She took me in, trained me and molded me into the lady that I am today. Also, she made sure that my father never laid eyes or hands on me again, and she swore to make him pay. I have no idea what steps she took, but a few weeks after my escape, news of his demise hit me. Apparently, he passed on through an auto crash. Words can't explain how relieved I was at the news. I was glad he was no more. Since then I swore to be a voice for the hopeless and people who have been abused. I however must say, my experience altered the way I view the opposite sex. It's like I always expect the worst from them” She said as she lifted up her eyes to lock with his.
There was something undeniably comforting about the way he looked and his composure. He sat quietly for nearly a minute just staring at her. She felt like she was being scanned and her very soul was being analyzed under that gaze. This made her fidget slightly as she shifted her gaze to somewhere else. Anywhere else but his eyes.
"I'm sorry for staring" he finally said. I'm also deeply sorry for what you passed through. However, Natasha you can't keep punishing yourself and every man for the sins of your father. You’ve done great for yourself academically, financially, and professionally. However, your success story is imperfect if you’re still a prisoner of your past. Every man is not your father. There are good men out there Natasha. All you have to do is just let the hurt go, and be more open minded. The healing process occurs a step at a time, but you have to take those steps. All I can do and all your loved ones can do is to encourage you through it all.
“I guess you're right” she said as she wiped off the tear drops that fell on her cheeks. “I’ll try” she added.
There you go, he said smiling.
Time had been far spent and the session was then wrapped up. Natasha walked to her car as the words of Dr. Martins rang in her mind. She sure would be restructuring some parts of her life a step at a time.
Months Later.
Its been months since Natasha took up Mrs. Ireti's daughters case, and had filed a case of domestic violence against Chief Dayo Arewa. She had obtained the medical report of Mrs. Tinu Arewa that proved how she was beaten to unconsciousness and the bodily injuries that were inflicted on her. She had lined up her witnesses who happily testified in favor of Tinu. Some of such witnesses were the Doctor that treated Tinu, Chiefs next door neighbor who testified to how he had constantly heard the shouts and cries of the young lady each time she was being beaten and then Tinu herself. She basically had the chief were she wanted him and right now, it was time to hear the judges final judgement. She woke up to the smell of victory in the air.
Within that High court, Natasha sat dressed in her legal apparel. An air of confidence was exuding from her as she faced the honorable Justice. Beside her was the counsel to the chief, an SAN who had used every legal technique in his arsenal to get the case to be thrown out of court to no avail. Right there at the bench, the judge was seated and was set to give judgement. He then opened his mouth to speak. The court was so quiet as everyone including the press listened with rapt attention at the words coming out of the Judges mouth. A while after commencing his judgement, he said those words that Natasha had been waiting to hear.
“With the prosecution having proved beyond reasonable doubt the severity with which the defendant had domestically abused his wife, this honorable court therefore finds the defendant Chief Dayo Arewa guilty of domestic violence and sentences him to two years in prison” That was it, Justice has been served! Natasha, turned and looked at the upset face of the SAN, with a smile forming on her lips and her eyes speaking a million words.
Upon the judgement being given, Chief was immediately taken out of court and to the black maria that will transport him to prison. Two years in prison was a good time for him to have a better understanding of how to treat women. Not to mention, his respect and political ambition has been ruined.
Natasha paid the court her respects and walked out of the premises with two junior lawyers from her firm, together with Mrs. Tinu and Mrs. Ireti following her behind. Tinu was in tears and right outside that court room, she embraced barrister Natasha while also saying words of appreciation.
“I'm glad that I could be of help" Natasha said. "Also, take this” She handed Tinu a business card. “That's the number and address of the founder of crowned women N.G.O. See her tomorrow by 9 a.m. Tell her I sent you and that you're the lady I told her about. The N.G.O would assist you with funds to start a business” That was it. Mrs. Ireti and her daughter were lost for words. Finally, Mrs. Ireti managed to speak.
My daughter, God will bless you. You will never know lack, pain, or suffering. Whatever you desire would be yours without effort.
Amen. God bless you too ma. She responded smiling. She then said her goodbye, turned, got into her car and drove off with her Junior lawyers.
While driving, she could not help but recall her therapy sessions with Dr. Martins. It has ended a month ago. She had a total number of twelve sessions with the Doctor. She could say for certain, those therapy sessions did her some good. She was a better person. Right then her phone beeped. It was a message from Candice.
She parked her car to read the text. Apparently, Candice had planned a get together for a few of her friends to celebrate the launch of a new business into her string of businesses. It was also a great way for Natasha to celebrate her recent victory in court. The end of the text read “remember Dr Martins? He's asked of you a few times, and he’ll be in the get together. Look good” Natasha, smiled. She was accustomed to Candice way of always trying to hook her up. At least this time, the person is someone that she actually likes. Also, Natasha knew Candice Pilot boyfriend Charles would be there and a few other familiar faces. So, she was open to the idea.
She responded to the text and drove off with a smile on her lips. She definitely loved the way she was at the best stage of her life. She felt whole!

Then there was silence. Her eyes were fixed on him, and her mind was clearly wondering how much information she should let out. As though she had made up her mind, she let out a sigh, and explained it all. Tears streamed down her cheeks. As she recapped her defilement and domestic violence ordeal that she experienced after her mom's death.I love images/ Getty images
