Dark love

He slapped me
I told no one because it didn't leave a mark
He loves me
I'm sure he'll deal with his anger when we get married
This i know cos as a gentleman He apologized

Then we got married
It was to stop
But one day he slipped and He punched me
I lost a tooth all because I tried to point out his mistake one time
I told no one
Twas just a tooth
He loves me
Cos as a gentleman he took me to the hospital.

Then,
He pushed me
Yes he pushed me down the stairs
With tears flowing down my cheeks it felt like I was flying.
Flying to my doom.
A few broken bones and a black eye.
When mama asked I said "I got involved in an accident".
He loves me
Cos as a gentleman he stayed with me while I was treated.
Bringing chocolates and my favourite flowers everyday.

He starved me
I got a call from my ex and he got jealous.
No food no water for 4 weeks.
I became a shadow of myself.
He loves me
Cos after 4 weeks he fed me and took me everywhere I wanted to go.

He did nothing today
Absolutely nothing
I'm waiting, waiting to see what he'll do
I see people crying and wailing
I can't understand what's going on
Toby wasn't here, so that's a good thing but why are they crying
I move towards the box
Toby loves me
I take a peek and then I know
I understand why they are crying
I know he loves me
Yet
He killed me.

Despite everything...

Today I got a compliment about how lovely my hands are. I couldn't help the first words out my mouth,  "These hands?" I asked while shaking my fists in the attendants face. He nodded in the affirmative. Hours later I kept pondering on my earlier interaction. Was his compliment genuine or a product of pure courtesy? Maybe it was just an offhanded comment because I am positive he had only glanced at my hands.  Later that evening I took a good look at my hands. I've had them for 25 years but I have never taken the time to look at them, really look at them. Talk more of admiring them. I use them alright, run them through my hair when I'm frustrated, use them to receive parcels and give some family and friends a handshake or pat on the back here or there.  But look at them? really look at them?
