Castaway

We stood before the gods
pouring libation
to ask after our sons
who went to battle
we asked for their triumphant return
we asked for our dead
to be received
with open arms in the afterlife
We stood before the gods
pouring libation
breaking kolanut
while we prayed
that our lands be fruitful
our wives dutiful
and our daughters beautiful
We stood before the gods
to ask our fathers
why our sons were yet to return
why the dead were left to roam
why pestilence still struck
why our women never return
from the maternity hut
Now we stand no more
our legs have failed
our knees buckling
our gods have gone deaf
our drinks are ours to drink
our kolanut ours to eat
we do not waste them on futile gods
